Today, I watched a few episodes of 30 Rock.

I was working on a paper for grad school most of the day, so I didn’t have time for much. I watched 30 Rock during breaks from writing the paper (which was not creative at all, by the way, it was miserable). Overall, I think 30 Rock really holds up as a seriously funny show. I’ve always been watching Alec Baldwin’s new reality show (which does not fulfill the ‘creativity fuel criteria), so it’s fun to see him acting in it. There are a few off-color moments, but mostly, it’s just funny and smart.

Today, I worked on editing my novel.

Right now, that means reading it and making very minimal notes in the margins (usually things I find confusing or sentences/paragraphs I’d like to improve). This is actually the second time I’m reading it and taking notes. The novel is going to be non-linear, so I spend a lot of time going back and forth between that version and the linear version. When I finished my first draft back in December, I read it in non-linear order first to try and catch where things get too confusing. Now, I’m reading through it linearly to see how I might make some improvements to the flow.

Today, I went to the movies to see Black Bag.

Is it the greatest movie I’ve ever seen? No. But, it was really fun! It’s the kind of movie that I think won’t do well on streaming because you really have to pay attention, and if you aren’t paying attention it’ll seem boring. It’s this understated spy thriller, but some of the characters are really a blast. One of the most fun things about it is that Pierce Brosnan is in it for like, five minutes, and it’s a lovely use of him. And, the guy from Bridgerton is there! His acting didn’t blow me away, but he’s very nice to look at.

Today, I watched an episode of the TV show Righteous Gemstones on HBO. It’s the first episode of the fourth, and final, season.

This one was really fun for me because this premiere was a departure from the normal show. They followed an ancestor of the main characters during the Civil War. It was such a cool choice for the show (even if it was maybe too gory for me in places). For one thing, it was shot beautifully, and Bradley Cooper was the lead. But it was also just really excellent storytelling. I’m excited to figure out how it fits into the rest of the season.

Today, I read the watched an episode of the TV show Foundation on AppleTV+. It’s a sci-fi show based on a book series by Isaac Asimov.

Apparently, I’m on a sci-fi kick. I’m wondering if it’s because everything seems so awful right now, and sci-fi has this eternally hopeful conceit that the world continues, even if it continues in newly twisted and awful ways. This show seems to be about aliens, though most everyone looks human, and they’re living under a horribly authoritarian/fascist regime. But, they’re hopeful that this empire will fall, and something better will replace it (even if it’s going to take 10,000 years). Maybe that’s the kind of hope I need right now.

Today, I read the short story “The Mill Girls” by Rebecca Turkewitz, published in Colorado Review. I went to follow the author on Instagram because I loved the story so much, and it turned out I was already following her. I truly have no idea why.

I haven’t written a short story in a long time. I’ve got one on the back-burner, but it’s “not safe for work” so I have limited time to work on it (a lot of my writing time is during breaks at my job). But reading this got me excited about it again, even though they’re about totally different things. This one has a hint of gothic-ness to it that I really enjoyed.

Today, I sent out my newsletter with the creative thing that helped me the most this week.

Also, I listened to an episode of the fiction podcast The Magnus Archives. There’s this thing they do with the sound design where when there’s a true supernatural element entering into the story, there’s these upsetting string sounds. It’s the kind of thing that’s subtle enough that it takes you a few episodes to realize the pattern (sorry for spoiling it for you, but it’s still worth listening to!). It’s the kind of thing I’d like to try and capture in writing one day. But, I have no idea how I would actually achieve that on the page. Sound is such an interesting medium that way.

Today, I listened to an episode of the fiction podcast The Magnus Archives. This podcast was maybe one of my first real entries into horror as a genre, and it’s had a profound influence on my novel. The premise is that they let people record their experiences with the paranormal, and in each episode, you’re hearing someone’s statements. Eventually, it develops bigger arcs, but the one-shot episodes are really impactful.

I’m in the middle of revising my novel, and since The Magnus Archives influenced a lot of the book, I’ve decided to go back to them. I’m sure they’ll appear in this blog more.

Today, I read a short story from a collection I bought called Afterglow: Climate Fiction for Future Ancestors. I’m about halfway through it at this point. It has some of the issues I think all anthologies have–the stories sometimes feel like they’ve been chopped off, or like they’re almost saying something but didn’t quite get there. But, I like how hopeful this book is. It imagines a world where we keep going and do better, but seems to except that things will get much worse before then. It feels very honest to look at the world that way. I’m excited to keep reading.

Today, I posted to my Patreon. It’s a post I call ‘Writing Life Updates’ where I do some short blurbs about how my writing life is going lately.

In some ways, this is an exercise that feels a little similar to what I’m doing with this blog, except I’m specifically reflecting on how I’ve engaged with writing recently. It also serves as a bit of motivation, forcing me to actually make progress on my writing.

My Patreon doesn’t have a lot of subscribers overall, but I keep doing it anyways. At this point, it keeps me thinking about writing, and that’s more important than anything.

Don’t forget, you can always subscribe to my Patreon for free.

I am trying to post something every day reflecting on creativity, what’s inspiring me now and what’s inspired me in the past, what I’m working on. Think of this is a public writing journal, made public only in an attempt to make myself more accountable.
