Today, I watched Severance on AppleTV+.

This is an interesting one because everyone is so obsessed with it. I’ll agree that the first season is excellent, but I think the second season doesn’t quite do it. I haven’t gotten to the finale yet, but I know people love it. And maybe that’ll bring it all together for me. But overall, this season just doesn’t hit the same.

It’s funny, but I have an issue with TV shows falling off, in a way that I don’t when I don’t like someone’s most recent book or album. Maybe it’s because so many people work on a TV show, so I feel like they should be able to keep it good. I still respect the art, obviously, but I’m less forgiving.

Today, I started reading Beauty Salon by Mario Bellatin, translated by Shook.

This book was recommended to me quite a while ago, and I finally picked it up at a bookstore recently. It’s a very short book, but I have a feeling it’s going to take me a long time to read because it’s very sad. All the same, though, I’m glad I started reading it since I’ve been meaning to for quite a while. It’s an excellent translation, too. After reading so much young adult fiction last year, I’m trying to make an effort to read literary fiction more often. It takes longer, but I think it feeds my writing in a different way than young adult fiction does.

Today, I wrote a few words on what might be a new novel.

Since finishing the first draft of my novel, I’ve been trying to start the next one, partly because I’m getting a little sick of Forgotten Holler. I tried to go back to a novel I started before Forgotten Holler that I put on the back burner, but I couldn’t get back into it. I needed something brand new, and I just wrote about a hundred words towards it. It’s hard to imagine all of that turning into a novel, but Forgotten Holler started that way, too. I just have to write 49,900 more words.

Today, I listened to “Peculiar, Missouri” by Willi Carlisle. I listened with a lot of intention and feeling it, so I’m counting it as my creative act of the day.

Today, I watched Sex, Lies, and Video Tape directed by Steven Soderbergh at a friend’s birthday party. He did this hilarious bit where he edited the opening AND the credits to be Morbius. It was a lovely time.

Today, I worked on editing my novel, Forgotten Holler.

I’m really speeding through it now, because I’ve realized there’s no point in re-reading every single word. It’s better to focus in on the places where I’ve made notes and to focus on how my protagonist develops.

I’ll be honest, in writing the first draft, the protagonist was the part I was least interested in. At the time, it seemed the less complicated than the folktale/short stories I was developing, not to mention trying to keep track of the many, many residents of the fictional town I was creating. I’m now realizing, of course, that the protagonist is the glue of my story. Without them, it doesn’t work. Fixing their arc will be the main task of the second draft of my book for sure.

Today, I read some poems from several different ARCs.

I’m a member of the American Library Association, so it’s really easy for me to get ARCs on NetGalley. In the past, I’ve written some reviews (which you can find links to on my website) and today, I got it into my head that I should do another one. There’s not a lot of competition for reviews, so it’s not that difficult to get them published. I think I write good ones as well, of course, but at the end of the day, it’s just a lot easier to publish a review than a short story.

Today, I saw Mickey 17 for the second time. This time, it was in IMAX.

I’m exhausted. Perhaps I’ll update this tomorrow with more thoughts.

Today, I worked on editing my novel.

This is the second time I’m reading it now in less than a month, so I’m moving through it a lot quicker. At this point, it isn’t necessarily worth it to read every single word so closely. I’m more looking for the moments that I called out as confusing during my read of it in non-linear order. The thing I’m mostly realizing is that I can’t trust readers to remember things from 30 pages ago. I cant just reference things, I have to explicitly restate them. At least, that’s what I think I need to do. Hard to say until I actually create, then read, a second draft.

Today, I sent out my newsletter with the creative thing that helped me the most this week.

Also, I watched Star Trek: First Contact with a commentary from Blank Check. Blank Check is a movie podcast that I don’t really listen to, but my partner subscribes to their Patreon where they do commentaries. A while ago they did all of The Original Series movies, and now they’re doing Next Generation.

Next Gen isn’t my preferred Trek, but this is definitely the best movie they offer us. My sci-fi streak continues, apparently. I still can’t decide if I should just lean into that and try to write something sci-fi. Maybe I’ll try to do a short story with a sci-fi bent.

I am trying to post something every day reflecting on creativity, what’s inspiring me now and what’s inspired me in the past, what I’m working on. Think of this is a public writing journal, made public only in an attempt to make myself more accountable.
