I think the hardest part of being a writer is actually doing the writing part. Obviously the publishing part is its own headache, but it’s very easy to end up so focused on the end product that you never actually produce anything (which is something I’ve fallen prey to myself many, many times).

So, I’d say, here’s how to get the writing actually done:

  1. Free write. I talked about that in my newsletter recently, consider subscribing.
  2. Write what you want to write in the moment, not what you think you should write. For me lately, that’s been fanfiction. Is that the most marketable thing I could be doing? No, of course not. But it keeps me writing, which I think is more important.
  3. Don’t beat yourself up about not writing. It’s way too easy to fall into a spiral that way. So you didn’t write yesterday, who cares? That is not the end of the world! The world only ends if you stop writing completely. So instead of berating yourself for not writing, just write.

Love and gratitude, as always.

I am trying to post something every day reflecting on creativity, what’s inspiring me now and what’s inspired me in the past, what I’m working on. Think of this is a public writing journal, made public only in an attempt to make myself more accountable.
