Ok folks, bear with me on this one, because this anecdote has a weird start.
In a recent episode of Rick and Morty, they visit an alien beer garden, and Rick says something along the lines of ‘there’s not a genocide in sight, what could be better than this?’
And it’s very easy to sort of right that off as a Nazi joke, but also. It definitely implies our current genocides, right? The first one that comes to mind is Palestine, of course, but I think it’s also worth pointing out that society is well on the path to executing a genocide against trans people, as well.
This joke sent me into a little bit of a spiral, one that had been brewing for a bit. I’ve been living with a significant amount of cognitive dissonance–things in my life are going real well and seem to be improving, meanwhile everything else in the world is falling apart. So I cried a lot, and I hated it because I got super stuffed up, but I did end up feeling better. Trying to ignore how guilty I was feeling for things going so well for me personally was eating me up.
Is there a feeling you’ve been putting off having? If so, I encourage you to find some space to let yourself just feel it.
Love and gratitude.
