Very recently, I was talking with a friend of mine who works in social media management about the difficulty of the algorithm, and how things like BookTok place a lot of pressure on writers to build followings. She told me recently that a potential client reached out to her hoping to grow her Instagram because ‘publishers won’t pick up her book because she doesn’t have enough followers.’
Now, I didn’t press too hard for details, so I have no idea the veracity of these statements. But, it is something I’ve heard before, and it’s why I spent so many years trying desperately to create a thriving Instagram account. But what I’ve had to contend with, once I finally admitted how much I hate social media, is that it could significantly effect the type of book deals open to me.
Here’s the thing though: I don’t think I want to work with a publisher that’s obsessed with social media. I’m sure that works for some people, but that’ just not who I am. Maybe that means I’m limited to indie presses, but if that’s the price I have to pay for stopping social media, I’ll gladly take it. This right here is infinitely better.
Love and gratitude.
