My mom has this exercise (adapted from Courtney Carver) called ‘Wouldn’t it be crazy if I…?’ She explains it better than I do, but basically, you try to come up with the wildest, craziest dream you’ve ever had. One of hers, apparently, was ‘wouldn’t it be crazy if I moved to New York?’ She stewed on that for a year before finally doing it, moving to the Hudson Valley. One of mine was ‘wouldn’t it be crazy if I started a lit mag?’ It was such an accomplishment for me to launch Penelle Magazine, and I’m very excited to publish issue 2 later this month.

I highly recommend spending some time thinking about this prompt and seeing if anything comes up for you. It can take two or three iterations before you finally get into the swing of it and start to unlock really weird, really crazy stuff. One of mine recently?

‘Wouldn’t it be crazy if I moved to Coney Island?’

Super out there, very unpractical, but who knows? Sometimes writing it down makes it feel possible.
